Medfield is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,273.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.8 km² (14.6 mi²). 37.6 km² (14.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,273 people, 4,002 households, and 3,269 families residing in the town. The population density is 326.6/km² (845.8/mi²). There are 4,048 housing units at an average density of 107.7/km² (279.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.78% White, 0.51% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.76% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,002 households out of which 50.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.8% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.3% are non-families. 15.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.41.

In the town the population is spread out with 33.6% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $97,748, and the median income for a family is $108,926. Males have a median income of $78,699 versus $44,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $42,891. 1.4% of the population and 0.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.1% of those under the age of 18 and 1.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Medfield was first settled in 1649 and was officially incorporated in 1651. Half the town was burned to the ground by Indians during King Philip's War.

Interest

The Boston Red Sox baseball player Curt Schilling lives in the town, in Drew Bledsoe's old house on Spring Street (Rte. 27).

The oldest home in the town is the Dwight-Derby House , one of the oldest homes in the United States

Fall is the only season that does not bear a street name in town.

The Episcopal Church of the Advent on Pleasant Street has a sister parish in Metfield, England.
