McLean County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 9,938. Its county seat is Calhoun6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 663 km² (256 mi²). 659 km² (254 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.73% water.

The county is bisected by Green River, the longest river entirely in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Bridge crossings of Green River are at Calhoun, Livermore and west of Beech Grove. Green River is navigable throughout McLean County, with Army Corps of Engineers Lock and Dam #2 at Calhoun assisting boat navigation.

Education

McLean County has a county-wide public school district with one high school (McLean County High School) and one grade 6-8 middle school (McLean County Middle School), both on Highway 136 just east of Calhoun.

The three grade K-5 elementary schools at Calhoun, Livermore and Sacramento are named for those towns. The Calhoun and Livermore elementaries have about 300 students each, while Sacramento Elementary has 125 students. The state has been trying to close it.

The mascot of McLean County High School is the cougar.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,938 people, 3,984 households, and 2,880 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). There are 4,392 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.58% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,984 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.00% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,675, and the median income for a family is $35,322. Males have a median income of $28,446 versus $19,432 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,046. 16.00% of the population and 13.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.10% of those under the age of 18 and 18.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The county's highest census total was 13,241 in 1910. The population generally declined each decade after that, reaching a low of 9,062 in 1970.
