McClellanville is a town located in Charleston County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 459.
It is situated on the Atlantic coast, on land surrounded by Francis Marion National Forest and has traditionally derived its livelihood from the sea and coastal marshes by fishing, shrimping and oystering.
In 1989 the town was devastated by the full brunt of Hurricane Hugo, which destroyed homes, fishing boats, trees and much of the picturesque character of this historic fishing village. The stronger north side of the eyewall passed directly over the village.
Residents who took refuge in Lincoln High School, which had been designated as a storm shelter, were surprised to be flooded by a storm surge which threatened to drown all the refugees. Helping one another, in pitch darkness, they were all able to get into the space above the false ceilings in the building and no one was lost.
Media and relief agency attention was focused on Charleston after the storm, which had proportionally much less damage, and it was several days before McClellanville was "discovered."
Much of the business in the area moved westward, away from the coast, and the business district is now focused along Route 17. Many of the area residents commute northward to Georgetown or southward to Charleston for employment.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.59% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 459 people, 206 households, and 138 families residing in the town. The population density is 85.2/km² (220.9/mi²). There are 254 housing units at an average density of 47.1/km² (122.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.59% White, 7.41% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 206 households out of which 20.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.75.
In the town the population is spread out with 16.3% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 36.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $42,500, and the median income for a family is $50,000. Males have a median income of $36,750 versus $25,781 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,425. 11.8% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
