Marlette, Michigan

Marlette is a city located in Sanilac County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,104. The city is located within Marlette Township.

Marlette is known as "The Heart of the Thumb" due to its location in Michigan. It is a relatively small community, with its own 9-hole golf course, public pools, and a municipal airport. Active Homes, a producer of modular homes had a factory located here, as well had factories producing automotive parts. Crops grown here include corn, beans and sugar beets. For the most part, Marlette is a closely knit rural community which is only an hour away from several urban centers, including Saginaw, Flint and Detroit.

History

Marlette was first settled in the mid-1800's by people from Ontario who sought tall timber and fertile soil. The city got its name from the family of settlers, "Marlatt" who carved their name on a log shanty. (source: MultiMag (http://www.multimag.com/city/mi/marlette/))

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,104 people, 787 households, and 497 families residing in the city. The population density is 492.3/km² (1,277.3/mi²). There are 839 housing units at an average density of 196.3/km² (509.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.82% White, 2.28% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. 2.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 787 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 32.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,938, and the median income for a family is $37,880. Males have a median income of $33,250 versus $21,725 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,592. 10.9% of the population and 9.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
