Maricopa, Arizona

Maricopa is a city (during the 2000 census was a census-designated place) located in Pinal County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,040.

The city was officially incorporated on October 15, 2003, becoming the 88th incorporated city in Arizona. Due to rapid growth, a special census was completed Saturday, March 13, 2004 which showed a population of 4,961.

Maricopa is currently the nearest stop to Phoenix on the Amtrak line, Sunset Limited. In the mid-1990s, Union Pacific abandoned 83 miles of track between Phoenix and Yuma to cut cost and to save thousands of dollars on property taxes in Arizona. This forced Amtrak to end service to Phoenix, effectly making Phoenix the largest city in the United States without direct passenger rail service.
