Manuel Puig

Manuel Puig (General Villegas, December 28, 1932 - Cuernavaca, July 22, 1990) was an Argentinian author. Among his best known novels are La traición de Rita Hayworth, Boquitas pintadas, and El beso de la mujer araña, which was made into the movie Kiss of the Spider Woman.

He was born in General Villegas (in Buenos Aires province). After graduating from La Universidad de Buenos Aires, he began working as a film archivist and editor in Buenos Aires, then in Italy. Puig's dream was to become a screenwriter, to write TV shows and movies. This never took off. In the 1960's he moved back to Buenos Aires, where he penned his first major novel, "La Traicion de Rita Hayworth" (The Betrayal of Rita Hayworth). Being of leftist tendencies, and seeing an oncoming rightist wave in Latin America, Puig moved to New York, where he wrote his later works (including El beso de la mujer araña).

El beso is the story of two prisoners, Molina and Valentin, and their life in a prison. At first glance El beso is a confusing novel with a very odd sense of order. It is written in a typical teletype format, using "-" to denote each speaker, the speakers name is never put next to his lines. The use of hyphens alludes to Puigs dream of writing a movie script, but is truly used to convey the greatest meaning of El beso. El beso de la mujer araña, through its use of hyphenated conversations, as well as footnotes and varying fonts, puts the reader in the seat of a government agent looking over a file of two prisoners, a homosexual pedophile, and a leftist revolutionary. This is a stab at the totalitarian government that took power in the mid 1970s in Argentina.

Unlike most authors, Puig did most of the tranlations of his works (a la Samuel Beckett). Puig lived in New York well into the 1980s, becoming a lecturer at Columbia University. In 1989 Puig moved to Cuernavaca (Mexico), where he eventually died in 1990.de:Manuel Puig it:Manuel Puig
