Mansfield is a town located in Bristol County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 22,414.

History

Mansfield was first settled in 1659 and was officially incorporated in 1775. Mansfield is largely known for being the home of the Tweeter Center (formerly Great Woods) concert venue, one of the most important in Massachusetts.

Geography

Area

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 53.7 km² (20.7 mi²). 53.0 km² (20.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.

Location

Mansfield's location is 28 miles south of Boston, 14 miles west of Brockton, 19 miles north of Providence, Rhode Island. You can go to Mansfield by car on Route I-95 and I-495 or by train from Boston and Providence.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,414 people, 7,942 households, and 5,861 families residing in the town. The population density is 423.0/km² (1,095.4/mi²). There are 8,120 housing units at an average density of 153.2/km² (396.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.30% White, 2.18% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.93% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,942 households out of which 44.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.34.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 38.1% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $66,925, and the median income for a family is $78,058. Males have a median income of $52,416 versus $36,658 for females. The per capita income for the town is $27,441. 4.5% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.6% of those under the age of 18 and 12.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
