Manlius (town), New York

Manlius is a town located in Onondaga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 31,872.

The Town of Manlius is east of Syracuse, New York on the east border of the county.

History

Manlius was created in 1794 as a much larger entity, which was decreased by the formation of new towns. The Erie Canal was important in the early development of the town. See also Central New York Military Tract.

Geography

The east town line is the border of Madison County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 129.4 km² (50.0 mi²). 128.5 km² (49.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,872 people, 12,553 households, and 8,887 families residing in the town. The population density is 248.0/km² (642.3/mi²). There are 13,071 housing units at an average density of 101.7/km² (263.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.70% White, 0.87% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 2.94% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,553 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $60,118, and the median income for a family is $70,655. Males have a median income of $52,065 versus $31,486 for females. The per capita income for the town is $31,825. 3.3% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
