Mangue Bit

The Mangue Beat movement was a cultural movement created circa 1991 in the city of Recife, Brazil, as a reaction of the cultural and economical estagnation over the city. Musically speaking is a mixture of local traditional styles (maracatu, ciranda) with the imported cultured of a MTV generation (rock, rap and hip-hop)

It have its manifesto ("Carangueijos com Cérebro" - or "Crabs with Brains" in English) written in 1992, by Fred 04 and Renato L.

MangueBit could be divided in two distinct generations: the first, in the early 90´s, leaded by Chico Science, Nação Zumbi (Zumbi´s Nation) and Mundo Livre SA (Free World Inc). And the second, in the early 00´s, by Re:Combo and by Cordel do Fogo Encantado. The former a copyleft movement that uploads half sampled music for download, and the latter a musical group that started as a moving theather group with roots on String literature (literatura de cordel)

Mangue Beat or mangue bit

There has been some misunderstanding over the spelling. Althoutgh the original movement named itself mangue bit (as in a computer bit, because of its electronical influences) the media mistakingly called them mangue beat (as in musical pulsation). The latter is far more common, but re:combo, trying to reborn the original name, have named it´s website www.manguebit.org
