Macomb, New York

Macomb is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 846.

The Town of Macomb is in the northwest part of the county.

History

The first settlers of the region arrived after 1810. The town was formed in 1841 from parts of the Towns of Gouverneur and Morristown.

Geography

The north part of the town borders Black Lake.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 163.6 km² (63.2 mi²). 158.6 km² (61.2 mi²) of it is land and 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 846 people, 310 households, and 226 families residing in the town. The population density is 5.3/km² (13.8/mi²). There are 864 housing units at an average density of 5.4/km² (14.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.75% White, 0.00% African American, 1.06% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 310 households out of which 35.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 107.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,115, and the median income for a family is $33,750. Males have a median income of $27,188 versus $18,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,526. 20.2% of the population and 11.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.2% of those under the age of 18 and 20.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Hickory Lake -- A lake in the northeast part of the town.
  • Pierces Corners -- A location near the east town line.
  • Pleasant Lake -- a lake in the south part of the town.
  • Pope Mills -- A hamlet in the north part of the town at the junction of Routes 58 and 184.
  • Ruby Corner -- A hamlet by the north town line and Black Lake.
