Lumberland, New York

Lumberland is a town located in Sullivan County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,939.

The Town of Lumberland is in the southwest part of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1798 from the Town of Mamakating, but was subsequently reduced to form other towns in 1807 and 1809. The town was partitioned in 1853 into three parts, Lumberland, Highland, and Tusten.

Geography

The southwest town line, delineated by the Delaware River, is the border of Pennsylvania. The east town line is the border of Orange County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 128.6 km² (49.6 mi²). 121.8 km² (47.0 mi²) of it is land and 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,939 people, 781 households, and 538 families residing in the town. The population density is 15.9/km² (41.2/mi²). There are 1,419 housing units at an average density of 11.7/km² (30.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.75% White, 0.21% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 781 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.6% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,625, and the median income for a family is $45,100. Males have a median income of $38,080 versus $27,222 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,665. 11.7% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Pond Eddy -- A hamlet on the north bank of the Delaware River.
  • Rio Reservoir -- A reservoir at the east town line.
  • Upper Mongaup -- A hamlet by the east town line.
