Lone Pine, California

Lone Pine is a census-designated place located in Inyo County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,655. The town is located in the Owens Valley, near the Alabama Hills.

On March 26, 1872 a very large earthquake destroyed most of the town and killed 27 of its 250-300 residents (see 1872 Lone Pine earthquake).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 48.5 km² (18.7 mi²). 48.2 km² (18.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,655 people, 709 households, and 448 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 34.3/km² (88.9/mi²). There are 867 housing units at an average density of 18.0/km² (46.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 83.20% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 2.72% Native American, 0.97% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 8.10% from other races, and 4.89% from two or more races. 26.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 709 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $29,079, and the median income for a family is $35,800. Males have a median income of $30,813 versus $22,778 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,262. 20.6% of the population and 16.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
