Livingston is a town located in Overton County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,498. It is the county seat of Overton CountyTemplate:GR.

Livingston is located at 36°23'13" North, 85°19'32" West (36.386942, -85.325568)Template:GR, approximately 15 miles north of Cookeville.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²). 13.3 km² (5.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.77% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,498 people, 1,543 households, and 924 families residing in the town. The population density is 262.8/km² (680.1/mi²). There are 1,746 housing units at an average density of 131.2/km² (339.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.08% White, 0.60% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,543 households out of which 22.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 37.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 23.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 83.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $23,309, and the median income for a family is $34,141. Males have a median income of $25,183 versus $20,991 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,558. 19.3% of the population and 14.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.7% of those under the age of 18 and 20.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
