List of universities in Australia

This is a list of universities and other higher education institutions in Australia.

The Commonwealth Higher Education Support Act 2003 (the Act) sets out three groups of higher education providers:

1. those on Table A (http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/hesa2003271/s16.15.html) – These bodies are all self accrediting bodies. Table A institutions are eligible for all funding under the Act;

2. those on Table B (http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/hesa2003271/s16.20.html) – Table B institutions are also self accrediting bodies. These institutions are *not* eligible for general Commonwealth funded places. They are eligible for Commonwealth research funding and can be allocated national priority student places in fields such as nursing and education; and

3. other higher education providers approved by the Minister. These can be a university, an institution established with the powers to approve its own courses, or a provider whose courses have been accredited by the relevant State or Territory authority. They can be allocated national priority student places in fields such as nursing and education.

Students at all three types of institutions are eligible for FEE-HELP, an income contingent loan to cover charges and fees.

Other self-accrediting higher education institutions

These institutions are for nearly all practical purposes, universities. However, they are deemed not to be because their academic focus is too narrow.

State and territory accredited higher education institutions

Each qualification these institutions offer must first be approved by the relevent state or territory authority. For the purposes of maintainability, it only aims to include institutions that create their own degree courses - not those that deliver courses created by others, or create only lesser courses. Links to full lists of Higher Education course originators can be found at the bottom of this section.

Institutions that only deliver higher education courses created by another institution can be found via the parent institution listed.

Groupings of universities

  • Group of Eight - the most prestigious universities.
  • IRU Australia - universities that aim to have the prestige of their Group of Eight brethren.
  • Australian Technology Network - technically minded universities that promote themselves as offering more practical courses than the prestigious and trying-to-be-prestigious ones. Two of the Group of Eight were once "technical universities".
