Linguacode

In the Star Trek television series, linguacode is a universal language code that is sometimes used by the United Federation of Planets in first contact situations. Unlike forms of cryptography, which are designed to secure communications and make them impossible to decode by anyone other than the intended recipient, Linguacode is freely broadcast without encryption of any kind, and is designed to be easily understandable to any technologically sophisticated intelligence in any form of language.
Linguacode was used in an attempt to contact the V'Ger probe in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. V'Ger, given its origins as an Earth vessel, would have easily understood the message, but ignored it since V'Ger refused to believe that any organic being would possess the intelligence necessary to contact it.
Linguacode was also mentioned as an option to contact the "Tin Man" in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode of the same name.
