Lindley, New York

Lindley is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,913. The name of the town was named after the early settler Eleazer Lindsley.

The Town of Lindley is in the south part of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1837 from the Town of Erwin.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania. US Route 15 and the Tioga River pass through the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 98.1 km² (37.9 mi²). 97.3 km² (37.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.90% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,913 people, 697 households, and 545 families residing in the town. The population density is 19.7/km² (50.9/mi²). There are 763 housing units at an average density of 7.8/km² (20.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.22% White, 0.31% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 697 households out of which 35.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.3% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.7% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,443, and the median income for a family is $41,250. Males have a median income of $30,037 versus $24,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,625. 15.9% of the population and 13.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • East Lindley -- A hamlet by the east part town line.
  • Lawrenceville -- A hamlet on the south town line, being a continuation of a larger community with the same name in Pennsylvania.
  • Lindley -- The hamlet of Lindley is near the center of the town on Route 15.
  • Presho -- A hamlet in the north part of the town on Route 15.
