Lexington, Missouri

Lexington is a city located in Lafayette County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,453. It is the county seat of Lafayette CountyTemplate:GR. Located in western Missouri, Lexington lies east of Kansas City.

History

Lexington was the site of one of the largest battles in the western campaign of the American Civil War. On September 12, 1861, 18,000 Confederate soldiers of the Missouri militia, led by Major General Sterling Price began a siege against the military post commanded by Colonel James A. Mulligan. On September 18, Price's army mounted an assault which forced Mulligan's surrender on September 20. Combined casualties were 73 dead, 270 wounded.

Lexington is located at 39°10'59" North, 93°52'30" West (39.183060, -93.875070)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.92% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,453 people, 1,815 households, and 1,210 families residing in the city. The population density is 494.1/km² (1,279.7/mi²). There are 2,015 housing units at an average density of 223.6/km² (579.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.02% White, 6.04% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.06% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,815 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,759, and the median income for a family is $39,583. Males have a median income of $31,672 versus $21,646 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,879. 14.9% of the population and 12.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
