Lewiston is a town located in Niagara County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 16,257.

The Town of Lewiston is on the western border of the county.

The Town of Lewiston was formed in 1823.

The Town Supervisor is Fred Newlin.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 106.3 km² (41.0 mi²). 96.5 km² (37.3 mi²) of it is land and 9.7 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.16% water.

The Niagara River forms the western boundary of the town, which is an international border with Canada.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,257 people, 5,882 households, and 4,252 families residing in the town. The population density is 168.4/km² (436.2/mi²). There are 6,147 housing units at an average density of 63.7/km² (164.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.98% White, 0.92% Black or African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,882 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $50,819, and the median income for a family is $58,620. Males have a median income of $46,748 versus $26,848 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,275. 5.8% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Bonds Lake County Park -- A park in the northeast corner of the town.
  • Colonial Village -- A hamlet by the south town line on Route 31 (Saunders Settlement Road).
  • Devil's Hole State Park -- in the southeast corner of the town.
  • Dickersonville -- A hamlet in the northeastern part of the town on Route 104 (Ridge Road).
  • Earl W. Brydges Artpark State Park -- On the eastern edge of the town.
  • Falcon Manor -- A location on the south town line, east of Colonial Village.
  • Lewiston - The Village of Lewiston is in the western part of the town.
  • Model City -- A hamlet on Route 104.
  • Pekin -- A hamlet on the eastern town line.
  • Power Reservoir -- A large artificial lake used to store water for power generation.
  • Reservoir State Park -- A park on the south shore of the reservoir and Route 265.
  • Sanborn - A hamlet originally called South Pekin, it was renamed after Ebenezer Sanborn in 1866. It is in the southeast corner of the town on Routes 429 and 31.
  • Tuscarora Reservation -- A reservation of one of the members of the Iroquois confederacy, located east of the reservoir.

Niagara University is located near the border of the City of Niagara Falls, and Niagara County Community College is located near the village of Sanborn in the Town of Cambria.
