Leighton Township is a township located in Allegan County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 3,652.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 92.0 km² (35.5 mi²). 90.3 km² (34.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.80% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,652 people, 1,246 households, and 1,004 families residing in the township. The population density is 40.4/km² (104.7/mi²). There are 1,386 housing units at an average density of 15.3/km² (39.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.75% White, 0.11% African American, 0.93% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,246 households out of which 41.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.4% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% are non-families. 14.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.29.
