Lawrence is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York in the USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,545.

The Town of Lawrence is on the eastern border of the county.

History

Settlers began arriving in the region shortly after 1800, but many left permanently during the War of 1812. The town was formed in 1828 from parts of the Towns of Brasher and Hopkinton.

Geography

The east town line is the border of Franklin County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 123.5 km² (47.7 mi²). 123.4 km² (47.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,545 people, 584 households, and 433 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.5/km² (32.4/mi²). There are 669 housing units at an average density of 5.4/km² (14.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.12% White, 0.00% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 584 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 20.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,715, and the median income for a family is $35,365. Males have a median income of $34,911 versus $22,375 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,402. 16.4% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Codeys Corner -- The junction of Routes ll and llC, northwest of Lawrenceville.
  • Fort Jackson -- A hamlet on Routes 49 and 51 by the St. Regis River is primarily in the Town of Hopkinton.
  • Laverys Corners -- A location west of Lawrenceville.
  • Lawrenceville -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes ll, 54, and 55.
  • McEwens Corners -- A location west of Lawrenceville on Route 54.
  • Nicholville -- A hamlet at the junction of Routes 11B and 55 in the south part of the town so that part of the community is in the Town of Hopkinton.
  • North Lawrence -- A community on Routes 11C and 55 near the north town line.
  • St. Regis River -- A stream flowing through the south part of the town.
  • Taylors Corners -- A location east of Lawrenceville.
  • Wagstaff Corners -- A location on Route 54 west of Lawrenceville.
