Laurel, New York

Laurel is a hamlet located in Suffolk County, New York, USA. It is inside the Town of Southold. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 1,188.

History

The area was originally known as the "Middle Ground" between Southold and the Town of Riverhead. Later it was called Franklinville, but relinquished that name for Laurel due to a conflict of names with another Franklinville.

Geography

Laurel is located at 40°58'35" North, 72°32'59" West (40.976340, -72.549589)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.33% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,188 people, 452 households, and 343 families residing in the hamlet. The population density is 136.9/km² (354.7/mi²). There are 686 housing units at an average density of 79.1/km² (204.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.05% White, 1.26% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 2.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 452 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the community the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.4 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $57,639, and the median income for a family is $67,000. Males have a median income of $48,409 versus $33,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $26,903. 4.0% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.3% of those under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
