Lassen County is a county located in northeastern California. As of 2000 the population was 33,828. The county seat is Susanville, the only incorporated city in the county.

History

Lassen County was formed in 1864 from parts of Plumas and Shasta Counties.

The county's name was derived from Mount Lassen which was named for Peter Lassen, one of General John C. Fremont's guides and a famous trapper, frontiersman and Indian fighter. He was killed by the Paiutes at the base of the mountain in 1859.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 12,226 km² (4,720 mi²). 11,803 km² (4,557 mi²) of it is land and 422 km² (163 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.46% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,828 people, 9,625 households, and 6,776 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (7/mi²). There are 12,000 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.81% White, 8.84% Black or African American, 3.26% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.43% Pacific Islander, 3.23% from other races, and 2.69% from two or more races. 13.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,625 households out of which 35.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.80% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 10.80% from 18 to 24, 36.90% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 9.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 168.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 192.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,310, and the median income for a family is $43,398. Males have a median income of $37,333 versus $26,561 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,749. 14.00% of the population and 11.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.10% of those under the age of 18 and 7.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
