Lansing is a town located in Tompkins County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 10,521.

The Town of Lansing has within it a village named Lansing. The town is on the north border of the county, north of the City of Ithaca.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Cayuga County, New York, and the east town line is delineated by Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 181.1 km² (69.9 mi²). 157.3 km² (60.7 mi²) of it is land and 23.9 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.17% water.

A common joke of the area is that the population of Lansing is actually about 2 people per mile, and it is overrun by cows. (This is not true, though it may seem true to a visitor to the area).

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,521 people, 4,374 households, and 2,668 families residing in the town. The population density is 66.9/km² (173.3/mi²). There are 4,634 housing units at an average density of 29.5/km² (76.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.09% White, 4.09% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 8.86% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. 2.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,374 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 32.7% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $48,250, and the median income for a family is $59,758. Males have a median income of $38,146 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,634. 6.7% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.1% of those under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
