Langley, Washington

Langley is a city located in Island County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 959 "Langleyites."

Although Langley actually sits on the north side of the southern half of Whidbey Island, and rests above Puget Sound, it is often referred to as Langley-by-the-Sea. It was founded in the 1800s, and was incorporated early in the 1900s. Today it is a modern village, with a year-round population hovering near 1,000; however, in the summer, it can swell to over 5,000 persons.

Langley is served by Island County Fire District #3, with a station across from City Hall. The current mayor is Neil Colburn (2004-2008), and the police chief is Bob Herzberg.

The city is one of the only--if not the only--incorporated city or town in Washington without a gas station within its city limits. Langley lost its only gas station in 1990 when environmental regulation required upgrades to the existing station, too expensive for the owner to complete. The station was shut down and used as a parking lot for the post office for several years, until a 20-room bed and breakfast was built on the site. Until 1989 Langley also sported the only car dealership on the Southend, but it became less and less profitable and eventually closed, its former location being remodeled into a resturaunt.

The city boasts a vibrant downtown shopping area, featuring a thrift store, a grocery store, and a natural food store. Within the postal district, there is another grocery; a half grocery store, half natural food store; and one Exxon gas station.

Langley also has the only movie theatre on the south end of Whidbey Island.
