Lanett, Alabama

Lanett is a city located in Chambers County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 7,897. Lanett is located in eastern Alabama, on the Chattahoochee River, northeast of Montgomery. One of the major industries is cotton milling.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²). 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,897 people, 3,186 households, and 2,125 families residing in the city. The population density is 564.6/km² (1,463.6/mi²). There are 3,589 housing units at an average density of 256.6/km² (665.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 45.36% White, 53.58% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,186 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.1% are married couples living together, 22.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,197, and the median income for a family is $36,481. Males have a median income of $28,066 versus $22,101 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,614. 20.7% of the population and 17.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.9% of those under the age of 18 and 19.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
