Lake Wales, Florida

Lake Wales is a city located in Polk County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,194. Lake Wales is a resort city, located in central Florida, west of Lake Kissimmee and east of Tampa. The Shrine of Ste Anne des Lacs is nearby. Among the attractions in Lake Wales include Bok Tower Sanctuary and Gardens and Spook Hill an optical illusion which makes a car in neutral look as if it is going uphill (gravity hill).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.3 km² (14.0 mi²). 34.6 km² (13.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.71% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,194 people, 4,044 households, and 2,563 families residing in the city. The population density is 294.8/km² (763.9/mi²). There are 4,598 housing units at an average density of 133.0/km² (344.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 59.49% White, 34.59% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 3.62% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 9.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,044 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.5% are married couples living together, 18.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 30.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,884, and the median income for a family is $33,029. Males have a median income of $27,809 versus $20,568 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,106. 21.4% of the population and 16.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.2% of those under the age of 18 and 14.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
