Lake Junaluska is a census-designated place located in Haywood County, North Carolina, USA. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,675. It is notable as the site of the headquarters of the World Methodist Council, a consultative body linking almost all churches in the Methodist tradition. It is also a camp and conference center for the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the US United Methodist Church (see Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center).

Geography

Lake Junaluska is located at 35°31'40" North, 82°58'35" West (35.527829, -82.976495)Template:GR. It has a beautiful setting: Haywood County is known for the 18 peaks over 6,000 feet (1,829 m), more than any county east of the Mississippi River. The 200 acre (0.8 km²) lake is surrounded by 1,200 acres (5 km²) of beautiful rolling hills and valleys.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 15.1 km² (5.8 mi²). 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.98% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,675 people, 1,262 households, and 861 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 186.8/km² (483.6/mi²). There are 1,848 housing units at an average density of 129.0/km² (334.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.65% White, 0.37% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,262 households out of which 18.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 29.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.57.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 16.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 20.6% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 28.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $46,932, and the median income for a family is $54,444. Males have a median income of $38,224 versus $29,219 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $23,031. 8.7% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.9% of those under the age of 18 and 3.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
