La Maddalena

La Maddalena (loc. A Maddalena) is a town and a island of about 12,000 inhabitants. The island is part of the La Maddalena archipelago off the northeastern shore of Sardinia, between Corsica and Sardinia.

The town was founded by Corsican shepherds. The local dialect, called isulanu, is a transiction between Corsican and gallurese, influenced also by the Genovese dialect. La Maddalena is full of beautiful beaches, rocky terrain, and ancient fortifications. Cala Francese and Basa Trinita are two popular beaches.

La Maddalena derives much of its income from tourism and from the U.S. Naval base housed on the island. The main method of traveling to La Maddalena is by boat from Palau, Sardinia. La Maddalena is connected by causeway with the nearby island of Caprera, the site of a former home of Giuseppe Garibaldi (now a national museum).

From 1987 the US Navy has an executive eviction for the abandonment of the island and its return in state of natural park, currently the archipelago is under observation from part of French Navy in how much partially radioactive contaminated subsequently to the incident near the sand bank Secca dei Monaci of the American nuclear submarine USS Hartford in October 2003.

In 2004 the Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi despite the 1987 standing pending eviction gave to US Navy rights to extend the base using part of the natural park surface to build a new wider office building.Template:Italy-geo-stub
