Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

Kitty Hawk is a town located in Dare County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,991. It was established in the early 1700s as Chickahawk.

Kitty Hawk was made famous on December 17, 1903, when Orville Wright made the first powered airplane flight from a sand dune four miles away in Kill Devil Hills.

The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) is named and the aircraft transport ship USS Kitty Hawk (AKV-1) was named for this town.

Apollo 14's command module was also named for this town.

Kitty Hawk is located at 36.1°N 75.7°W.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.3 km² (8.2 mi²). 21.2 km² (8.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,991 people, 1,265 households, and 866 families residing in the town. The population density is 141.2/km² (365.8/mi²). There are 2,618 housing units at an average density of 123.6/km² (320.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.13% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,265 households out of which 27.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 23.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,813, and the median income for a family is $48,676. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $25,744 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,960. 6.5% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.9% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
