Keystone, South Dakota

Keystone is a town located in the Black Hills of Pennington County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 311. It had its origins in 1883 as a mining town, and has since transformed itself into a resort town, serving the needs of the millions of visitors to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is located just next to the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.4 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.4 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Keystone has been assigned the ZIP code 57751 and the FIPS place code 33820.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 311 people, 152 households, and 84 families residing in the town. The population density is 42.0/km² (108.6/mi²). There are 209 housing units at an average density of 28.2/km² (73.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.50% White, 0.00% African American, 1.93% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 2.25% from two or more races. 3.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 152 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.5% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.1% are non-families. 35.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.60.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 30.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,406, and the median income for a family is $36,250. Males have a median income of $24,219 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,828. 16.9% of the population and 13.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.9% of those under the age of 18 and 23.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
