Kent, New York

Kent is a town located in Putnam County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,009.

The Town of Kent is in the northeast part of the county.

History

The Town of Kent was incorporated as the Town of Frederick in 1795 when the township boundaries were realigned. Its name was changed to Kent in 1817. A small portion of the Town of Philipstown was transferred to Kent in 1877.

The major population center of the township is Lake Carmel, a settlement around an artificial lake developed in the 1920s. Historically the population centers had been Farmer's Mills and Ludingtonville, little of which remain. The town is part of the Carmel Central School District and is served by the Carmel Post Office under the name Kent Lakes (because another community upstate has a post office called Kent).

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 111.8 km² (43.2 mi²). 105.2 km² (40.6 mi²) of it is land and 6.6 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.88% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,009 people, 4,868 households, and 3,748 families residing in the town. The population density is 133.1/km² (344.8/mi²). There are 5,353 housing units at an average density of 50.9/km² (131.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.81% White, 1.41% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.24% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.81% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 5.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,868 households out of which 38.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.4% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% are non-families. 17.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $72,346, and the median income for a family is $79,716. Males have a median income of $51,634 versus $38,575 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,984. 4.1% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
