Kendall, New York

Kendall is a town located in Orleans County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,838. The town is named after Amos Kendall, the U.S. Postmaster General under President Andrew Jackson.

The Town of Kendall was incorporated in 1835 from the Town of Murray and is in the northeast corner of the county. It was formerly called North Murray and was not settled rapidly due to swampy terrain.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 85.4 km² (33.0 mi²). 85.2 km² (32.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water. Kendall borders Lake Ontario.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,838 people, 979 households, and 794 families residing in the town. The population density is 33.3/km² (86.3/mi²). There are 1,103 housing units at an average density of 12.9/km² (33.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.04% White, 0.63% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 979 households out of which 37.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.1% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 18.8% are non-families. 14.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 105.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $49,821, and the median income for a family is $50,952. Males have a median income of $36,959 versus $24,309 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,373. 5.0% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.6% of those under the age of 18 and 3.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Kendall Mills -- A location on the eastern town line, formerly called Webster Mills.
  • Lomond Shore -- A Lake Ontario shore community next to the Lake Ontario Shore Parkway.
  • Morton -- A community, formerly East Kendall, located on the border of Monroe County, New York.
  • Troutburg -- A beach community, formerly a small port on Lake Ontario.
  • West Kendall -- A location northwest of Kendall.
