Junius is a town located in Seneca County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,362.

The Town of Junius is in the northwest corner of the county.

History

The town was set apart from the Town of Fayette in 1803. The region was first settled around 1795. The region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution.

Geography

The west town line is the border of Ontario County, New York, and the north town line is the border of Wayne County, New York. The New York State Thruway passes across the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 69.5 km² (26.9 mi²). 69.3 km² (26.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,362 people, 494 households, and 375 families residing in the town. The population density is 19.7/km² (50.9/mi²). There are 532 housing units at an average density of 7.7/km² (19.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.50% White, 0.51% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 494 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.7% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,317, and the median income for a family is $44,444. Males have a median income of $28,828 versus $22,440 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,806. 7.9% of the population and 5.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Junius

  • Dublin -- A location in the western part of the town, formerly called Junius Post Office.
  • Junius Ponds -- A cluster of ponds near the west town line. The name is also used for a service area on the Thruway.
  • Malcom -- A location on the east town line.
