The Town of Johnstown is located on the southern border of Fulton County, New York. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the town had a population of 7,166. The cities of Johnstown and Gloversville are located within the town.

Geography

The southern town line is the border of Montgomery County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 184.9 km² (71.4 mi²). 181.8 km² (70.2 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.63% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,166 people, 2,471 households, and 1,840 families residing in the town. The population density is 39.4/km² (102.1/mi²). There are 2,728 housing units at an average density of 15.0/km² (38.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.44% White, 4.63% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.56% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 3.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,471 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.0% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 114.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 116.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,591, and the median income for a family is $44,167. Males have a median income of $27,940 versus $24,688 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,910. 9.1% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
