John Hylan (April 20, 1868–January 12, 1936), nicknamed "Red Mike", was the Mayor of New York City from 1918 to 1925. Hylan graduated from New York Law School in 1897 and worked as a motorman on the Brooklyn Rapid Transit elevated railway. He was later fired after nearly running down a supervisor with his train.
As mayor, Hylan started the IND division of the New York City Subway. An ally of William Randolph Hearst, Hylan defeated John Purroy Mitchel in the 1917 mayoral election, won re-election in 1921 and was defeated for re-nomination in 1925 by State Senator James J. Walker. Walker later appointed Hylan to the municipal judiciary. Hylan Boulevard on Staten Island was named for Mayor Hylan. Hylan died of a heart attack on January 12, 1936.
