Jeffersonville, New York

Jeffersonville is a village located in Sullivan County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 420. The name is derived indirectly from Thomas Jefferson.

The Village of Jeffersonville is in the southeast part of the Town of Callicoon on Route 52. The postal code is 12748.

History

The original settlers arrived around around 1830 and called the village Winkelried. A hotel in the village was called the Jefferson Hotel, after President Jefferson, and the village was subsequently renamed to its current name. The village was incorporated in 1924.

Geography

Lake Jefferson is a small lake adjacent to the village.

Jeffersonville is located at 41°46'50" North, 74°55'56" West (41.780417, -74.932281)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.82% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 420 people, 162 households, and 92 families residing in the village. The population density is 395.5/km² (1,028.2/mi²). There are 206 housing units at an average density of 194.0/km² (504.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.95% White, 1.43% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.67% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 2.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 162 households out of which 25.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% are married couples living together, 6.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% are non-families. 37.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the village the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 29.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 78.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $32,500, and the median income for a family is $48,125. Males have a median income of $34,219 versus $22,232 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,899. 6.7% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Town Haul

In 2005, Jeffersonville was the subject of a TLC Network television program, in which interior designer Genevieve Gorder, a regular designer for TLC's program Trading Spaces, undertook to make over several buildings in the town.
