Jefferson City, Tennessee

Jefferson City is a city located in Jefferson County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,760. The city was originally named Mossy Creek, but was changed in 1901 to honor Thomas Jefferson. Carson-Newman, a Baptist college founded in 1851 is located in Jefferson City.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.9 km² (5.3 mi²). 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,760 people, 2,821 households, and 1,692 families residing in the city. The population density is 565.3/km² (1,464.0/mi²). There are 3,155 housing units at an average density of 229.8/km² (595.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.99% White, 6.29% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.76% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 2.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,821 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 25.6% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,911, and the median income for a family is $33,964. Males have a median income of $28,306 versus $18,739 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,770. 24.7% of the population and 19.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
