Jasper is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,270.

History
The town was formed in 1837 from parts of the Towns of Troupsburg and Canisteo.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 136.4 km² (52.7 mi²). 136.4 km² (52.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,270 people, 403 households, and 324 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.3/km² (24.1/mi²). There are 521 housing units at an average density of 3.8/km² (9.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.27% White, 0.31% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 403 households out of which 42.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.7% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% are non-families. 14.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.15 and the average family size is 3.51.
In the town the population is spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $33,393, and the median income for a family is $35,962. Males have a median income of $28,375 versus $21,875 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,194. 20.6% of the population and 15.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
