Jasper, Alabama

Jasper is a city located in Walker County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 14,052. The city is the county seat of Walker CountyTemplate:GR.

Jasper is the birthplace of famous TV and movie stars Tallulah Bankhead, Polly Holliday and George Lindsey, the actor who played Goober on The Andy Griffith Show. It was the birthplace of United States Senator John H. Bankhead II and former Speaker of the House William Brockman Bankhead, and home of the late Congressman Tom Bevill.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 69.6 km² (26.9 mi²). 69.6 km² (26.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.04% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,052 people, 5,728 households, and 3,809 families residing in the city. The population density is 201.9/km² (523.0/mi²). There are 6,473 housing units at an average density of 93.0/km² (240.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.15% White, 13.98% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,728 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,044, and the median income for a family is $43,674. Males have a median income of $35,182 versus $22,868 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,491. 13.8% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
