Janesville is a city located in Rock County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 59,498. The city is located to the southeast of and adjacent to the Town of Janesville.

Carrie Jacobs Bond, songwriter, was born in Janesville in 1862. Located in Janesville, the Lincoln-Tallman House, completed in 1857, models the Italian Villa-style architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Janesville has a public, internationally themed botanical garden, Rotary Gardens, that is open during the summer months to the public for free (donations accepted) and is home to numerous weddings and group gatherings.

The Janesville Gazette is the primary newspaper of Janesville and is a property of Bliss Communications. Janesville also has a bi-weekly community newspaper, the Janesville Messenger, a Community Shoppers Inc. paper.

Janesville is located at 42°41'2" North, 89°0'59" West (42.68411, -89.016654)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 72.8 km² (28.1 mi²). 71.3 km² (27.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.10% water. Janesville is divided by the Rock River, which crosses through downtown.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 59,498 people, 23,894 households, and 15,746 families residing in the city. The population density is 834.1/km² (2,160.6/mi²). There are 25,083 housing units at an average density of 351.7/km² (910.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.27% White, 1.26% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.96% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 2.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 23,894 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $45,961, and the median income for a family is $55,133. Males have a median income of $40,910 versus $26,423 for females. The per capita income for the city is $22,224. 6.5% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
