Equatorial Sundial from Qing Dynasty of China.
Equatorial Sundial
Qing Dynasty (1368-1644 CE)
This typical Chinese sundial has two faces. In summer, when the Sun is high in the sky, the time is read on the top face of the dial.
In winter, the shadow falls on the bottom face.
The flat piece of metal can be lined up with the pointer's shadow to make it easier to read the time.
This picture was taken in July 2004 from an exhibition at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, California. There is a ghostly reflection of a person in front of the glass case holding this exhibit.
