IBM UltraPort

IBM Ultra Port is a nonstandard USB port used by IBM on its range of Thinkpad laptop computers. Electrically the UltraPort connector is identical to the standard USB port, except that devices connected to it can draw more current than is possible with a normal USB connector. UltraPort uses a proprietary mechanical connection, so UltraPort devices cannot be plugged into a normal USB interface. IBM sells adapter cables which allow normal USB (type-A) connectors to be attached to an UltraPort connection, but not the converse.
Most ThinkPad models after around 2000 come with an UltraPort connector on the top edge of the laptop's screen, and IBM sells a variety of laptop-relevant UltraPort devices, including webcams, speakers, and microphone arrays.
UltraPort was designed in 1999 in response to the proliferation of many laptop computers from Sony, Fujitsu, and others that had built-in cameras.
