Hunan University

Hunan University (湖南大学), located in Changsha, Hunan, is one of the most important universities in the People's Republic of China. It traces its history back to the Yuelu Academy founded in the Song Dynasty, over 1,000 years ago. It is arguable if this makes Hunan University the oldest in China. There is no official recognition of this status, and the original Yuelu Academy had no degree-granting mechanism, or other features of a modern university.
The university today is organised into 18 departments. Most of the undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as much of the research, is related to science or engineering in some form. Hunan University is among China's top universities in the number of research articles published in international academic journals. In addition, the university has won more than 500 national awards. In 2000, the university merged with the Hunan Financial and Economic College, and in 2002 with the Hunan Computer College.
There are two university campuses. Science departments are located in the main south campus, while liberal arts is concentrated in the north campus.
