Houston County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 19,718. Its county seat is Caledonia6. The United States Census Bureau's La Crosse Metropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Houston County (as well as La Crosse County, Wisconsin to the east).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,473 km² (569 mi²). 1,446 km² (558 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.85% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,718 people, 7,633 households, and 5,411 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (35/mi²). There are 8,168 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.47% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,633 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.00% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $40,680, and the median income for a family is $49,196. Males have a median income of $32,557 versus $22,158 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,826. 6.50% of the population and 4.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.40% of those under the age of 18 and 11.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
