Hounsfield, New York

Hounsfield is a town located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,323. The name of the town is from Ezra Hounsfield, a land agent and land owner.

The Town of Hounsfield is in the western part of the county.

History

The land compromising the town was purchased by Augustus Sackett in 1801. Hounsfield was formed from the Town of Watertown in 1806. The town and its citizens were deeply involved in the War of 1812, primarily due to the Battle of Sacketss Harbor.

Geography

The northern boundary is the Black River and the western boundary is Lake Ontario.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 311.9 km² (120.4 mi²). 127.6 km² (49.3 mi²) of it is land and 184.3 km² (71.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 59.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,323 people, 1,350 households, and 908 families residing in the town. The population density is 26.0/km² (67.5/mi²). There are 1,839 housing units at an average density of 14.4/km² (37.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.53% White, 0.57% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,350 households out of which 31.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% are non-families. 26.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 106.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,011, and the median income for a family is $47,742. Males have a median income of $32,464 versus $26,406 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,806. 10.6% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
