Houghton, New York

Houghton is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in the Town of Caneadea in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the hamlet had a total population of 1,748.

Houghton College is a private, coeducational college next to the village.

Geography

Houghton is located at 42°25'31" North, 78°9'29" West (42.425385, -78.157942)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.3 km² (2.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.81% water.

Houghton is located on the west bank of the Genesee River and on Route 19.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,748 people, 313 households, and 180 families residing in the region. The population density is 276.6/km² (715.5/mi²). There are 333 housing units at an average density of 52.7/km² (136.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 95.37% White, 1.54% African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 2.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 313 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% are married couples living together, 3.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the area the population is spread out with 11.0% under the age of 18, 59.4% from 18 to 24, 10.1% from 25 to 44, 8.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 70.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 67.7 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $37,639, and the median income for a family is $49,375. Males have a median income of $38,125 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $9,139. 25.0% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
