Hot Spring County, Arkansas

Hot Spring County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 30,353. The county seat is Malvern. Hot Spring County was formed on November 2, 1829 and named for the hot springs at Hot Springs, Arkansas which were within the borders of the county at the time.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,611 km² (622 mi²). 1,593 km² (615 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.16% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 30,353 people, 12,004 households, and 8,834 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 13,384 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.33% White, 10.26% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,004 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,543, and the median income for a family is $37,077. Males have a median income of $27,800 versus $19,461 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,216. 14.00% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.00% of those under the age of 18 and 14.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
