Hoover, Alabama

Hoover is a city in Jefferson and Shelby counties in middle central Alabama. A suburb of Birmingham, the population of the city was 62,742 as of the 2000 census. Hoover is one of the three primary cities in the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman Metropolitan Area, consisting of the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan statistical area and the Cullman micropolitan area. Hoover’s neighborhoods and planned communities are located along the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. AmSouth Bank, BE&K, BellSouth, and Blue Cross have large operations in Hoover.

Hoover is home to the Riverchase Galleria, which is one of the largest shopping centers in the Southeast and Alabama's most visited tourist destination. Also, it is one of the largest mixed-used centers in the country (around 2 million in square footage). The anchors of this shopping center are JCPenney, McRae's, Parisian, Proffitt's, Macy's, and Sears.

The Birmingham Barons minor league baseball team, which traces its history to 1885, play its home games at the 10,800 seat Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

History

William H. Hoover organized the Employers Mutual Insurance of Alabama in 1921 with offices in Birmingham. Hoover moved his company, then known as Employers Insurance of Alabama, south of Birmingham to Highway 31 and began purchasing land for the construction of dwellings for his employees. This area was identified as the Hoover Community.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 113.1 km² (43.7 mi²). 111.7 km² (43.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 62,742 people, 25,191 households, and 17,406 families residing in the city. The population density is 561.7/km² (1,454.6/mi²). There are 27,150 housing units at an average density of 243.0/km² (629.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.66% White, 6.77% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 2.89% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.40% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 3.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,191 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 25.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $61,982, and the median income for a family is $79,912. Males have a median income of $55,660 versus $34,836 for females. The per capita income for the city is $33,361. 3.4% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 3.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
