According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.5 km² (8.3 mi²). 21.5 km² (8.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 25,043 people, 10,688 households, and 5,878 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,163.6/km² (3,014.7/mi²). There are 11,494 housing units at an average density of 534.0/km² (1,383.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 79.75% White, 15.30% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.57% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.00% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 2.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,688 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.0% are non-families. 36.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 17.8% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $45,431, and the median income for a family is $60,256. Males have a median income of $40,969 versus $34,694 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,491. 7.6% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
