Hinds County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 250,800. Its county seats are Jackson and Raymond6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,272 km² (877 mi²). 2,251 km² (869 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 250,800 people, 91,030 households, and 62,355 families residing in the county. The population density is 111/km² (288/mi²). There are 100,287 housing units at an average density of 45/km² (115/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 37.31% White, 61.12% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 91,030 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.10% are married couples living together, 22.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.22.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 12.10% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 20.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 88.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,991, and the median income for a family is $40,525. Males have a median income of $30,930 versus $24,593 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,785. 19.90% of the population and 16.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.60% of those under the age of 18 and 15.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
